Lost & Found

My pet is lost. What should I do?

  1. Act fast!
  2. Search the area where your pet was lost and let neighbors know your pet is missing.
  3. Call your local law enforcement (see table below) to verify where a found pet is taken in your area.*
  4. Visit the Humane Society of Weld County every 1-2 days, including weekends.  We cannot identify your pet over the phone; as you are the only one who can positively identify your pet.**
  5. Consider placing an ad in the Greeley Tribune; lost and found ads are free for one week. Don't forget to check the daily found ads for possible matches.
  6. Post and scan through community Web sites such as craigslist.com.
  7. Post signs nearby and on our lost and found board in the shelter lobby.

*Please keep in mind that even if your local law enforcement does not contract with the Humane Society of Weld County there is still a chance that your pet could be at the shelter or someone may have called the shelter to inform us of a found animal.

**Please bring a photo of the pet, if you have one. Fill out our “Lost Report” and do a walkthrough of the shelter.   Owners will not be called unless tags or chip information is current and correct.

I found a lost pet. What should I do?

  1. Contact The Humane Society of Weld County and file a “Found Report.”
  2. If you plan to hold the animal during the owner location process have the pet scanned for a microchip.  The Humane Society of Weld County and most veterinary clinics have handheld scanners.*
  3. If you do not plan to hold the animal, contact your local animal control (see table below) or call The Humane Society of Weld County.
  4. Consider placing an ad in the Greeley Tribune; lost and found ads are free for one week. Don't forget to check the daily found ads for possible matches.
  5. Post and scan through community Web sites such as craigslist.com.
  6. Post signs nearby and on our lost and found board in the shelter lobby.

*Please remember if you plan to hold the animal during the owner location process after 72 hours of caring for an animal, in accordance with most city ordinances, by law it becomes your legal responsibility.
